Although the winter season can be beautiful and fun to experience, it can also bring a season full of detrimental weather conditions with snow, ice, rain and sheer unpredictability. Driving in these conditions can be challenging, nerve racking and sometimes dangerous. That’s why the choice of your tires plays such an important role in keeping you and your family safe and sound from the inclement weather that winter brings with her.
Mark Cox, the director of Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Colorado, says it best:
“One of the most important factors in starting, steering or stopping on ice and snow is your tires. It makes no difference if you have a front-wheel, four-wheel or rear-wheel drive, your vehicle will perform better in most winter driving conditions, if it is equipped with purpose-built winter tires, instead of all-season radials.”
So how do Blizzak tires really hold up amidst the perils of winter?
I have been using Blizzak tires for the last 10 years on my Mercedez Benz (the Blizzak LM-60 is great for luxury vehicles) and I have to be honest: I love the tires! I live in New York where our winters can be harsh, and I’ve gotten a lot of action out of my tires. But since I started this blog, you might not think that I’m the most impartial point of view. That’s why you’ll find many other user reviews here for a more diverse opinion. But first, I want to give you some background on the technology behind the tires, how they work, and a sense of how effective they really are.
Bridgestone is one of the 3 largest tire manufacturers in the world. Blizzak studless winter tires were introduced by Bridgestone in 1993. The cutting edge technology behind Blizzak Tires is its’ patented Multicell tread compound, which provides safety on snow and ice covered roads all over the world. They have been intensely tested through some of the toughest winter terrain in places like Alaska and Canada, and have come through with amazingly high marks.
Studded tires were notorious for their high performance in snow and ice, and also for the way the studs destroyed pavement and generated dust. Subsequently, they have been outlawed in many states in the U.S. and in Canadian Provinces.Bridgestone developed the Blizzak tire to offer an impressive substitute for studded tires, without the destructive nature. In every test performed, the Blizzak tire equaled the high performance of studded tires in each category, except for stopping and accelerating on ice, where it was only 8% behind, and eclipsed the performance of all-season radials in every category. Blizzak tires come the closest to the high performance of studded tires in snow and ice than any other non-studded tire ever made.

What makes Blizzak tires better than other snow tires on the market?
Blizzak tires use its’ patented Multicell tread compound that contain thousands of microscopic cells and pores which become more and more exposed as the tires are used, and creates a biting action that grips the road. As the tires wear, new pores are uncovered on the surface of the tire tread. When vehicles drive on icy roads, a thin layer of surface water usually develops on the tire tread. The thousands of pores on Blizzak tires Multicell tread compound help to discard the surface water, resulting in a smoother ride with little to no slipping, better handling and greater breaking force.
How long will Blizzak tires last?
The average winter driver can get 12 to 15 thousand miles of winter driving out of their Blizzak tires before the Multicell tread compound gets worn out. So, the average driver is looking at a minimum of 3 winter seasons worth of use, assuming an average of 3 to 4 thousand miles of driving per winter season. This is just an average, as other factors must be considered when calculating longevity of any tire, such as, the make and model and condition of the vehicle, among other variables.
Bridgestone’s Blizzak winter tire collection come in more sizes, and can accommodate more vehicles than any other winter tire in North America. Known as “The Official Tire of Winter,” they have a 17 year track record of excellence, and are the most effective non-studded tire in snow and ice on the market today. These facts, along with its affordable price tag make Blizzak tires the #1 choice for millions of drivers world wide.
